Battle of the Curves – 8520 Vs 8900

I finally got my Blackberry again. After waiting 2 months and getting reunited with my Blackberry, I am a satisfied and a happy man. I purchased Blackberry Curve 8900 on 15th Feb 2010 via eBay ( Its got its own small story! ) and I received it yesterday. I decided to get my former 8520 and make a small video comparison on Curve 8520 Vs Curve 8900.

BlackBerry 8900

This is the original Javelin. This has been around for some time and after I had tasted the Blackberry 8520 some months back, I knew it was time to move up from the starter edition and get myself a real Blackberry. Technical specifications aside, there are only minor differences between the two.

  • Silver Colored Metallic Bessel
  • GPS ( Spoiler : Works only with a Data Plan)
  • Got the original TrackBall
  • High Resolution 480X360 screen
  • 3.1MP Camera with Auto focus and Flash (I missed this out in the Video review)
  • Hard Plastic Casing on the Back Cover
  • Better Battery backup

BlackBerry 8520

This was launched recently and is (what should I say) stripped down version of its more powerful cousin. I say powerful not because its slower than 8900 infact its got the same specifications. The reason is that 8520 in spite of being NEW, it actually runs on the old hardware of Javelin!

  • The New TrackPad
  • 2.0MP Camera without Flash and Autofocus
  • Tacky  Soft Plastic on the Back Cover

So, which one is better. I’d say both are good. If you just need a basic Email solution from Blackberry minus ALL bells and whistles, then there are no second thoughts. BlackBerry 8520 hands down! If you wanna move up the ladder and get the more visually appealing device with a better resolution and crisp display, Blackberry 8900 is your best bet.

Note : Both these devices are 2G and in India, 3G is still expensive and rare. So, getting a Bold doesn’t really make much sense if you are not going to be running on 3G, On the positive side, Bold gives you a better processor and has got impressive looks. If money is not a concern. Go get a Bold.

What are your thoughts on this? Which Blackberry do you prefer?
