Downgrade iPod Touch 3G from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2

Apple released the 3.1.3 firmware recently. To be precise, the day I bought myself an iPod Touch 32GB 3G. The moment I hooked the beautiful device with my computer, iTunes took no time to prompt me about the new UPGRADE. Being a good boy that I am , I readily pressed the upgrade button and watched it in full glory as the Sliver Progress Bar kept edging towards completion.

My joy was short lived after I got to know that firmware 3.1.3 has not been cracked( as of this writing) and I could not install Cydia. After 2 weeks of being stuck with iTunes, I decided to downgrade and was successful with the process.

Note : I also edited my Hosts file in etc folder of Windows 7 as I had read on the internet about an “ineligible iPod Device” error arising from the downgrade.  I am not sure if this error comes or not but I followed the Steps mentioned here prior to starting with the downgrade and would recommend you all to do the same to be on the safer side. Worked for me.

Downgrade Process

Step 1

Make sure you have firmware 3.1.2 downloaded. So how do you know if you have it or not? Simple, check this location if you have an IPSW firmware file or not:

C:/ Users{your windows user name} / AppData / Roaming / Apple Computer / iTunes / iPod Software Updates

Download your preferred firmware from here.

Update Your browser may change the ipsw-file into a zip-file. In that case, just rename it to end in .ipsw and iTunes will accept it.

Step 2:

Once you have located the firmware 3.1.2 IPSW file, you need to put your iPod in Restore mode by following these steps carefully:

  • Make sure that your iPod touch is NOT CONNECTED to the PC/Mac
  • Now turn off your iPod touch. This does not mean just clicking the power button BUT hold the power button until it asks you to Power it Off.
  • Now hold the home button. Keep holding it for 10 seconds and then connect your iPod touch to PC/Mac while holding the Home button.
  • If you see the “Connect to iTunes” message on your iPod touch then it means you are now in recovery mode:

Final Step:

Once in recovery mode. All you need to do is:

  • Click on your iPod touch device on the iTunes side bar
  • Press Shift + Click on Restore button and you will be prompted to enter the firmware location. Give it the locations where your firmware 3.1.2 is located and click OK

iPod Touch Downgrade 3.1.3 to 3.1.2

Hurray your iPod touch 2G /3G has been downgraded to the jailbreakable 3.1.2 firmware

I am one of those who does not own an iPod Touch *ducking under the table*
Isn’t it a bad thing to downgrade, considering there may be bugs fixed. :D

I see some security issues fixed in the upgrade at About the security content of iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPod touch

Usually, bugs are fixed but for most people (80%) they offer hardly any noticable difference. Though, running on the latest firmware is always recommended what comes with the newer upgrades usually deactivates the jailbreaked iPod/iPhones. People therefore prefer downgrading to previous versions to keep their devices jailbroken to run Applications not certified by Apple or just to get rid of iTunes

This way doesn’t work because apple stopped signig the 3.1.2 firmware is there another way to downgrade….

Could you please elaborate on the error message you are getting. This method works 100% tried on my own iPod Touch 3G

Also, refer to the Note at the starting of the post if its about the device ineligible error. It should correct it.

The message said that the firmware was inelgible, I unfortunately did not save my shsh to the cydia server. Also I have a MC086LL which according to most forums and step by step guides that I have read say that the downgrade doesn’t work for my model. Most jailbreaks also are not compatible. I have successfully downgraded after 12 hours of research and multiple attempts at different ways. I direct downloaded the 3.1.2 firmware for the Ipod touch 2g to my desktop for ease of finding. Held the shift key down and pressed the restore at the same time. Which is exactly what your instructions say to do but the difference is the 3g 3.1.2 firmware pops the inelgible message and 2g 3.1.2 firmware doesn’t. Also I did not put the ipod into recovery I had it connected and on the entire time. I had only two messages pop up while using the 2g 3.1.2 firmware. First it said Itunes cannot sync with ipod. I just clicked ok and it kept processing the downgrade. Second and error message popped up I don’t remember what the code was it just had a lot of zero’s. When that message popped up the I pod had the Itunes logo with the usb cord telling you to sync with itunes. I again pressed ok to the error, disconnected the ipod pressed the home key and bam it downgraded. Which at first I thought it didn’t work and I would be screwed without a way to fix the issue because of the unable to sync message but once I unplugged and pressed home it went directly to the spring board. I’m sorry if I confused you or probally was just plain wrong, But the way I discribed does work.

Thanks for the elaborate description.
I am running 3.1.2 firmware 7D11 on iPod Touch 32GB 3G Model – MC008LL. My jailbreak is working like a charm and I have installed SBSettings (the reason why I jailbreaked)

So, in the end. Yours is now downgraded? I think you were successful as after a couple of successful attempts. Also, please note that iPod needs to be in Recovery Mode before you plug it with iTunes.

Hey there,

Do you think this will work for the iphone 3GS 16g? I am currently have 3.1.2 installed but unfortunately my phone stated I had to reboot and gives me the “Connect to Itunes”message. So when i connect it tells me to restore my iphone & that it will upgrade me to 3.1.3 which I do not want to do since will keep me from jailbreaking it.

Thanks for your time.

I am not sure but I think BlackRa1n would work for you cause I used the same for jailbreaking my iPod Touch. You dont need to upgrade to 3.1.3 just mannualy download the 3.1.2 firmware and install it and use Blackra1n.

Hope it hepls

After jailbreaking with Blackra1n and installing Cydia on my Ipod Touch 3g 3rd gen 32GB,I switched the power off completely as directed.. When I connected the Touch to the PC and switched the power on I was informed by itunes that it has detected an Ipod in recovery mode and it has to be restored.
I think I should have put power on and rebooted the Itouch before connecting to the PC.

Is that correct.

Hello Jatinder

The Jailbreak for 3.1.2 is tethered that means it needs to be jailbreaked using BlackRa1n once again if you power off the device completely.
Its simple and would take 1 min. Just plug it in and make sure iTunes process is not running. Do “Make it Rain” and withing a few minutes your iPod will be ready to work again and then you can connect with iTunes normally.

Reply

66 wendy March 23, 2010 at 2:15 pm

all u do is:
1) go to black rain
2) make it rain
then your iphone will be restored again.
when ever u turn off your new jb iphone always make it rain to restore. **do not restore with itunes**

u can connect to itunes after you “make it rain”.
the forums are the best way to understand how jb iphones work.
so if you turn off your phone, reboot or if your battery dies, once you turn your iphone back on you will get the “connect to itunes” screen. when u see this that means u have to use black rain to turn it on not itunes. once you do this your jb iphone will work like normal and then you can connect to itunes and do your thing. never upgrade to 3.1.3 when itunes ask u or you will lose your jb. the best thing is to select “do not ask me again” when it pops up when u connect. hope this helps.

Downloading firmware and only getting a zip file.
Hi guys and gals,
when you download the firmware file, be sure to select the all files instead of the default extension which is .zip. After that be sure to add the .ipsw after the name and then download. If you don’t do this, windows will automatically think that it is a zip file and save it with a zip extension.

Unfortunately for me, I have an Ipod 3g model MC008LL that came with 3.1.3 :( I will have to wait for the jailbreak for that version. If anyone knows what is going on with that release, I would appreciate some info.

Hey guys, this is kind of late. I got a iPod Touch 32GB, 3G. My iPod has been jailbroken before, but I never pressed the “Yes, Make my life easier” button in Cydia. Recently, i upgraded my iPod to 4.0 on accident, along with my iTunes, which is version 9.2 now. All of my apps have been wiped, and when i try to downgrade it to 3.1.3, an error pops up saying, “The iPod “iPod” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (3194).” Any tips, anyone?

Now my iPod says that “The iPod “iPod” cannot be restored at this time because the iPod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.” Help?
