Microblogging the new obsession

Web 2.0 introduced some new terms eg. Blogs, Forums etc. The concept of a website whose character is nothing but dynamic. Their existence depends on the constant change in the content. A Blog needs to be updated frequently, a forum needs to have active discussions.

That’s the nature of Web 2.0, it keeps changing unlike static websites which may remain the same days after days, months and even years. One of the new starts which we have is micro blogging. Now, its not quite different from blogs. Its just that there is a restriction on the number of words, to be specific actually its 140 characters.

Now Twitter which is a microblogging service has caught on like a storm, everybody is busy sending tweets on “What are you doing?” kind of stuff. It may comprise of various degrees of obnoxious messages to just hilarious short sentences! Like ,

  • “Going to morning walk”
  • “Cant concentrate on Studies”
  • “Its raining outside”
  • “Saw a bad movie”

It just can be anything which people think about. Say, incoherent ramblings about their ordinary life. Daily activities which are a routine. In spite of being of little use, Twitter is a hit among the netizens, mainly because its turned out into a great communication tool between complete strangers.

You dont make friends here. You follow them, it just means listening to their messages. Whatever they have to say you get to hear it, indulge in a discussion or just ignore it. Its a simple, sweet, fast way of communication. More appropriately, its like shouting out oblivious of the fact if someone is listening or not. Obviously, this creates a lot of noise. Random messages from people whom you aren’t even acquainted with but that’s the spirit of Twitter.

At times, the tweets can go virul. Spreading faster than forest fire. Followers at times might like a certain tweet so much that it may get retweeted again and again, forming a chain which can go on endlessly. Because of the fact all tweets are capped at 140 chars, their relevance it maintained.

Twitter has grown into a competitor to search engine giants like Google, Bing, Yahoo because of its dynamic nature. Webpages are indexed by search engines very slowly as compared to how instantaneously twitter indexes the tweets. A webpage may take anywhere between a few hours to some days to get indexed but just as you hit the submit button on your tweet. Its been indexed like just ZAP!

The reason being the different environment. all tweets are sent using the main parent Twitter while webapges are spread all over the internet so vaste even the search engines do not know. If quick information is what you need then give twitter a shot. If there is anyone in the word who was tweeted about it (Surely with 160 million and growing users, there must be!) you have good chances of finding it.

So, what are you waiting for. Microblogging is the new SMS. Its quick, free and a great way to kill time. Care to follow me at @VaibhavKanwal? ;-)
