I am a Mac

The Plot : Wishes and desires

I had been contemplating switching to a Macintosh for some time now. Somehow, the price was always remained a deterrent. My Dell Inspiron 1420 was going strong and I had had no problems in my 2 years of ownership.

However, the charm of Windows had faded away. After almost 10 years with Windows, I wished for novelty. I wanted something different which let me work the way I want to without feeling monotonous in what seemed like repetitive choirs of clicking the Start Button and navigating cautiously over list of never ending programs.

Owning a MacBook Pro was a fantasy I always believed would come true. If only my DELL could let me go….

A Brutal Murder : Dell no more

One fine day, while working, my Dell’s display went ZAP! The screen became a solid Pink with linear lines all over the place. One part of me became worried while the other rejoiced at the prospect of MacBook. The display came back to normal but every few hours went back to the irritating state making it evident that an obituary was soon round the corner.

Here is a pic of my dying dell. You can tell the sorrow in its 14″ 1280X800 resolution display.

Dell Dying

I am a MAC

I decided to get myself a Macbook Pro 13″ soon after my journey with “PC” ended. I went down to the Apple Store here in Delhi and got myself a shiny new machine. It looked great, felt better and worked like a charm. In the last 2 days that I have learnt a couple of things as to why Macs are expensive.

Why Mac’s are more Expensive

  • You buy an experience and not just a notebook
  • Apple sells more of a cosmetic product than just a notebook
  • You pay not only for the hardware but also for what comes bundled with it
  • You pay a premium for what is exceptional workmanship and first grade industry design

In the end, it comes down to your preferences. If you really care about factors other than the specifications and configuration. You would understand why Apple sells these little marvels at such exorbitant prices.

I paid Rs.70,990 for MacBook Pro 13″ and after using it for 2 days. I am very happy with my purchase.

I am still learning the MAC way of doing things. Would pick up new things along the way but this has been the most satisfying purchase ever.

How many of you are considering making a switch from PC to MAC? What are your thoughts? Let us know.

I would be keen on knowing how much you spent on buying “original” software for the Mac. Additionally i would be keen on hearing your experience post your warranty / apple care period when you are on your own.

I did not buy any application for my MAC. I got Microsoft Office 2008 for MAC installed from Apple Store after some bit of bargaining ( with license of-course) so that adds to the discount. Other than that, I have downloaded mostly free applications from the internet.

iLife came installed with the regular stuff for my day to day activities. The only “product” I might have to purchase should be “Adobe” for the Photohop and Dreamweaver but that’s true for Windows also. So, as I see it, I need to buy only Adobe. For most people, who do not need it. iLife would work just as fine or say Gimp.

I hope my MAC lasts me some 3 years or so, but I am not sure considering my DELL died in 2 years. In the eventuality, I would update my blog.

Yeah, I saw that on your blog. Looks cool. I hope you dont switch laptop’s so soon :P 1 year / laptop is kindoff injustice considering my MacBookPro. I won’t consider getting a new for ATLEAST 3 years now.

For the lovely gaming machine. Get yourself an Alienware Desktop. You’ll be pleased or maybe PS3…

Have been using Dell Inspiron 1420 for more than 2yrs myself. Working decently thus far, has issues with heating every 6-8months but the warranty covers that bit. I have been considering getting a Mac for sometime now but the prices have always made me reconsider. It may be good for designers and people who are into developing but given my heavy Internet usage (two browsers open and many tabs in them) I don’t think I would have any use of a Macbook. Besides, I don’t want to pay for every application. I either use free ones or get *ahem*Pirated*ahem* ones, which I can’t do on the Mac.

Vaibhav,

you have beaten me to it. Please let us know if after a week or two you definitely feel like it is the way to go. I am on Windows 7 and thinking of finally making the switch. I can’t believe my new laptop in 2010 takes as long to boot up and shut down as it did in 1998.

I am just wondering though if I will be able to learn everything on the mac as all my team mostly uses PC at the moment. Anyway good to know you are on mac as will be asking you for hints/tips when I make the switch.

I have been thinking of getting a mac for quite some time now, but price is the major obstacle. So till then I’ll have to bear with my Dell laptop. But if “something” happens to it (–evil smiley–) I’m going to get a Mac the very next day.

Upload some more pics of your Mac in action.
